Vacations are nice… especially when you design one to get you out of the cold and into a place that is sunny. That is exactly the reason why I decided to take a vacation out to San Diego.
A friend of mine lives out there and he asked me to visit sometime. I could not pass on that opportunity, especially since where I live is in a constant winter like state. The plans were made in October for a trip out on Patty’s Day weekend. No better place to visit than what is essentially the land of IPAs and microbreweries.
So I booked the flight and decided to head out to the Sunshine State. Everything was going to plan. Luck seemed to be on my side for the trip out. They had been having shitty weather the past couple of weeks but when I was scheduled to show up, the forecast started calling for amazing weather! Which living up to my nickname of “Sunshine” it only seemed fitting that it would follow me.
Things were looking up, everything at work was going as planned. So I decided to open my email to check my flight status.. the first flight was perfect and on time. Perfect! Let me check the connecting flight…
CANCELED…
WHAT…. THE…. FUCK!!!!
How in the fuck could that flight be canceled… it is Texas to Cali.. no way could this be a weather issue… it definitely was not.. apparently all 737 flights had been axed… definitely not the news I wanted the night before my trip. This kicked off the most stressful couple hours that I have had, pretty much ever. The airline decided to rebook me. This trip had me going to Philly for a 6 hour layover.. who the hell would want to spend that amount of time in that dump?!? Worst of all I would have lost a day in San Diego..
With a little search my buddy found a flight that would get me there by noon. That sounded like a phenomenal idea to me.. more time in the sun! So I call the airline… 2 hour wait and they’ll call me back… it’s already 6pm east coast time. Well, fuck… they better call back so I can schedule this flight…. a couple hours pass and they actually called back. I was able to get it changed.
The next issue is the flight is scheduled to leave at 7am.. that meant waking up at 2am to leave at 3 and get to the airport by 530. A nice little 4 hour nap on the couch.. I didn’t trust myself to wake up if I slept in my bed. So I’m up and out the door… slept like complete shit, so I’m tired as hell. Sit around the airport for an hour or so… time to board up. Hop on the plane.. oh, what’s this?!? A cute girl is next to me. This trip is looking up again. Plane takes off… damn, I’m tired I’ll take a little nap.
Look, I’m a large man… nose, completely clogged up… you see where this is going. I dozed off for probably 45mins.. I wake up… Fuck! Everyone is staring at me… Those poor people must have thought a grizzly bear was sleeping on board.. whatever, fuck ’em! I got a little power nap in to reenergize myself. Felt good. Landed in Dallas for a quick minute, boarded the plane and I’m off.. nothing really happened on that flight. Land in San Diego, gather my bags… 5 mins later, we are drinking some beer!
What had been a stressful few hours ended up being totally worth it!! So now I’m straight chillin’, taking it all in for the next few days and eating all the local grub and booze that I can!! It has all been incredible thus far. I plan on writing a post daily while I’m out here. So stay tuned about the Cali Adventure that I’m on!!
